Midweek racing during Cox Plate week heads to Geelong in Victoria for its annual Cup meeting, a key lead up race to the Melbourne Cup. There’s also a handy NSW card at Warwick Farm.
Here are our best bets for both venues. You can also read a full Group 3 Geelong Cup preview here.
The best bet of the day comes mid way through the Geelong card, with TRULY DISCREET (R4#12, $2.90) stepping back from a Group 2 event to Benchmark 78 grade. She was well beaten by Invincibella that day but the speed map suggests she’ll get an easy on-pace run against this field. Looks very hard to beat.
The Geelong Classic for the three-year-olds is a key Derby lead up and a strong performance from a horse like HOME GROUND (R6#4, $9.50/$3.10) will secure its place in the Flemington feature. Trainer John Sargent is a known producer of quality stayers and his gelding looks ready to go here on the back of a ‘better-than-it-looks’ eighth in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes.
MAID OF HEAVEN beats the boys with jockey Rachel King in the G1 @MoetUSA Spring Champion! ???

Chris Waller sent VELOCITA (R7#2, $3.00) to the races here a fortnight ago and she produced a solid win over 1400m. She was third up that day on a bottomless Heavy 10 and the fitness will stand her in good stead for today’s jump to 1600m. Expect her to come charging home again and send punters home a winner.
