Caulfield Cup Day: Betting Preview & Tips

THE Spring Carnival is showing no signs of slowing down, with another excellent day’s racing at Caulfield and Randwick for punters to get stuck into.

Caulfield should remain a Good track despite some showers forecast before race day, but things aren’t as good at Randwick, where persistent rain all week is likely to ensure another Heavy racing surface.

Here are our best bets on both cards. You can also get a full runner-by-runner preview of the Caulfield Cup here.

A fortnight ago we unloaded on Godolphin cold RANIER (R2#4, $2.60) at Flemington, only to watch him be a good thing beaten. Like all real punters we’re having another crack – but it isn’t purely out of vengeance. This bloke looks head and shoulders above his rivals and there looks to be plenty of pace on to set it up nicely. The only concern is risk-averse Hugh Bowman is on board – he won’t want to bring any unwanted stewards’ attention his way with the Cox Plate only a week away.

He’s won his last two and only missed a place twice in 19 career starts – there’s something in the name of SPENDING TO WIN (R3#4, $5.50). First up, and at his first go around Caulfield, he camped just behind a solid tempo and ran down Eduardo late. That horse will have Super Too for company in front in this week’s Group 2 Caulfield Sprint and our boy one again gets the gun sit. They drop 100m but with on-pacers likely to be advantaged, we’re keen to bet up.

A number of Derby-bound three-year-old stayers line up in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic and we’re keen to see EXTRA BRUT (R6#3, $3.40) continue his winning form. His final furlong in the UCI Stakes at Flemington was ultra impressive and from a kinder draw he will likely settle further forward in the run. The presence of Thinkin Big and Tavirun will ensure a genuine tempo which he should thrive off.

Remember when Redzel’s run in the Premiere Stakes ensured he had question marks over his form leading up to The Everest? They broke the track record that day and finishing alongside the star sprinter was none other than a first up INVINCIBLE GEM (R9#4, $8.50/$2.90). She drops sharply in grade for this and steps up to 1400m with a confident James McDonald aboard. Don’t be fooled by her second up ‘stats’ – her last two second up efforts have come behind Happy Clapper and Winx! The each-way bet of the day.

A selection of promising three-year-old sprinters line up in the Listed Brian Crowley, but it is the overtures of Godolphin’s ROOSEVELT (R6#7. $3.30) which we cannot resist. This is a step up from his last-start demolition job in midweek class, trouncing a field of fit sprinters by five lengths on a Heavy 10 surface. He’s unbeaten on rain-affected ground and looks ready to run well in this grade.

Lightly-raced gelding FIRSTHAND (R8#2, $7.00/$2.35) arrives for his second up assignment following a similar preparation to 12 months ago. Back then he closed well first up before dominating in the wet over this track and trip second up. There’s enough speed on up front here to set things up for a closer and while he’s never raced on Heavy, he is unbeaten from two goes on Soft tracks. He’s a great each-way bet running on to fight out the finish.
