A-League Round 2: Preview and Tips

A-League Round 2 features a derby between cross-town rivals Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers.

Melbourne City and Wellington Phoenix, the only two sides to win on the opening weekend of the season, are on the road at Central Coast Mariners and Brisbane Roar respectively bidding to make it two-from-two for the season.

Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets

Friday October 26

Adelaide United and Newcastle Jets get the weekend action underway on Friday night at Coopers Stadium. The Reds, who will be playing their second straight home game, started the new season with a solid 1-1 draw against minor premiers Sydney FC last week. The Jets were one of only two sides beaten in Round 1 when they suffered a 2-1 defeat at Wellington Phoenix. Last year’s grand finalists will need to improve on that performance, but it may be a point at best they can return from Adelaide with as they look to avenge a 5-2 loss on the last visit to Coopers Stadium.

Prediction: Draw ($3.55)

Central Coast Mariners vs Melbourne City

Saturday October 27

Melbourne City were one of just two teams to win in the opening round when they beat cross-town rivals Melbourne Victory 2-1 in a derby at Marvel Stadium. They head to Gosford bidding to make it six points from six and could well be the value bet. Central Coast Mariners side caught the eye in a 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium in Round 1. But they haven’t beaten City in the last two seasons and that shouldn’t change on Saturday.

Prediction: Melbourne City to win ($1.80)

Sydney FC vs Western Sydney Wanderers

Saturday October 27

A blockbuster Sydney derby at the SCG on Saturday night as both sides look to improve on 1-1 draws on the opening weekend of the season. The Sky Blues were held by Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium and the Wanderers also came from goal down to earn a point at Perth Glory. Steve Corica will be looking for improvement from last year’s minor premiers and a derby might just be what Sydney FC need as they face a Western Sydney side they have dominated. It is just one defeat in the last 14 head-to-heads including a win in the FFA Cup Semi-Final.

Prediction: Sydney FC to win ($1.70)

Brisbane Roar vs Wellington Phoenix

Sunday October 28

Wellington Phoenix were the surprise package of the opening round, scoring a 2-1 win over last year’s Grand Finalists Newcastle Jets. Can they now build on that when they head to Brisbane to face a Roar side which drew 1-1 with Central Coast Mariners in Round 1. All three games last season ended in draws and that might be the way to approach this one again.

Prediction: Draw ($3.90)

Melbourne Victory vs Perth Glory

Sunday October 28

Melbourne Victory started last season in slow fashion before ultimately being crowned premiers in the Grand Final. It was a defeat to begin the new season too as they lost 2-1 to cross-town rivals Melbourne City. Victory get the chance to make amends against Perth Glory, who were held 1-1 at home by Western Sydney Wanderers last weekend. Glory’s travel sickness should see Victory get off the mark for the season.

Prediction: Melbourne Victory to win ($1.73)
